Our Learning This Week...
Here's a peek at our week : )
------------------------------------------------
This week students learned about the soft /c/ and soft /g/ sounds. Below is a song they learned to help them remember the sounds each make and when to use those sounds in their reading.
In writing, students have continued working through the writing process learning about the importance of organizing their ideas prior to writing. They brainstormed important information about their week swimming and then used that information to complete an organizer.
In math, students learned about using the counting on strategy to solve for a missing variable in an equation. For example, when presented with the problem 15 - __ = 7 this can be solved by making it into an addition problem e.g. 7 + ___ = 15. Working forward, count on to find the missing value. Students used number lines and ten frames to help them visualize this process.
In science, students continued to examine the concept of energy. Students listened to a song about movement and did some actions to go with it. After reviewing the various aspect of movement-- i.e. pathway, speed and direction-- students worked in groups experimenting with various objects to determine its pathway, direction and speed.
In gym, students have been learning about how to skip rope. Students have practiced jumping using two feet and alternating feet.
On Friday, we got together with our Buddy class for a fun St. Patrick's Day scavenger hunt. The students in grade one have been learning the names of the different coins and their value. They worked with the Gr. 4/5 buddy to find the "pots of gold" around the school and determine how much money was in each!
Important Updates & Reminders:
Google Classroom is available for students to access. Below are instructions for logging in. I have recently added a number of activities that cover many of the skills and concepts we have learned this past term. Have a look!
Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as extra activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. If you have trouble logging in or questions about the classroom, let me know. If you need your child's email or password information let me know. I can resend it.
