Our Learning This Week...

We have had a busy first week back from the break. Take a look at what we have been up to!

-------------------------------------------------

In language arts, we have been learning about 'Ze Floss' letters. These are words in which certain letters (l, s, f, z) are doubled at the end of the word. For example, dress, fuzz, puff and ball. Students have been learning when to apply this rule and building words with these doubled letters in them.

In writing, students continue to work on fixing sentences to include capitals, periods and meatball spaces. We have also introduced some new high frequency words (can, are, have, you, was, yes) which students have been practicing. Lastly, they have begun working on writing about what happens in winter which ties in with our science unit on Earth Systems (i.e. seasons).

In math, students have been cycling through a variety of math stations to review concepts related to number, such as, skip counting, identifying numbers to 100, using number lines, place value and more.

In science, we have continued learning about giving instructions to reach a desired result. Today the students looked at sequencing a series of pictures to show the steps to build a snowman, get ready for school and use the telephone. Students learned that some instructions must be given in the right order to get the correct result. For example, you wouldn't start riding your bike and then put on your helmet!

In social, the students have been learning about community-- a place where people live, work and play together. We discussed some of the different kinds of work people do in a community such as policemen, teachers, doctors etc. and also jobs people do at home like cooking, cleaning, cutting the grass etc. They know that Calgary is a community, but Calgary was not always here. Many hundreds of years ago, the First Nations people lived in small communities called villages. They travelled around the following the buffalo. Every person in the village had a different role or job to do. Students learned about the roles of men, women and children and wrote about what they learned.

In gym, we began learning how to play floor hockey. We started with learning how to hold a stick, then moved on to dribbling the puck and passing to a partner.
