Our Learning This Week...

Hello Friends & Happy Friday! It was a busy and exciting week. Take a look!

In language arts we have focused on leaving spaces in our writing. To support students with this we have been working on editing sentences as a group for capitals, periods, meatball spaces and grammar. Students have also been working on writing a blank for each word in their sentence before beginning to print their sentences. Finally, we have been reading sentences and clapping for meatball spaces and snapping for periods. These function as kinesthetic and oral cues to include these elements in their sentences. We have also continued to review a variety of letters and sounds and also added more high frequency words (heart words) to our sound wall. Students also worked on developing their ear to listen for beginning and ending sounds in words, segment words into syllables or blend syllables to make words, identify pairs of rhyming words and change parts of words to make new words. These are all very important skills that will support students in their reading and writing as we move forward. In math, we began building numbers to 100 using base ten blocks and learned about number lines. Students learned the parts of a number line and how number lines help us to organize and compare numbers. We created a life-sized number line in our classroom and used it to plot different numbers. 










This week we spent time learning about Remembrance Day and why it is important. The students also created some art to display in the gym for our assembly. They did a fantastic job and the results were beautiful. 




In gym, students have been developing their hand eye coordination using the scoops and balls. They have had fun trying to toss and catch the ball while doing a variety of movements. For example, tossing the ball and letting it bounce or spinning around before catching it. They have also tried tossing and catching the ball with a partner.

Hello Families! As this was a short week there is no blog post, but I did want to let you know that our Google Classroom is now available for students to access. Below are instructions for how to login the first time.  Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as optional activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. From time-to-time I will post new activities connected to various areas of study. Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary. Hello Everyone! What an amazing performance by the students at EMJ last night and.  especially our very own Grade Ones! They were fantastic! Keep reading to see what else we have been up to this week : )  --------------------------------------------------- In language arts we have been learning about 'how-to' or procedural writing. To start we talked about why we write-- to entertain, inform, teach, instruct etc. Then we looked specifically at giving instructions. The students gave me the steps to make a Wow butter and jam sandwich with some hilarious results! Then we made popcorn and the students worked in groups to write down and draw the steps to make popcorn. We also ate some popcorn so that made it even more fun!  In math, we have continued to learn about counting collections of objects and representing those numbers in a variety of ways.
