Our Learning This Week...
Hello & Happy Friday! Here's a look at our week : )
---------------------------------------
REMINDER:
Parent-Teacher Conferences are next Thursday (4:00-7:30pm) and Friday (8:00am-12:30pm). Please log into your My CBE Account to book a time to meet with me and discuss your child's progress.
----------------------------------------
This week the students reviewed the sounds for the letters: h and k. So far we have reviewed the letter sounds for: a, t, s, i, m, p, b, n, d, o, u, c, f, and g. Each day we review these letters and work on building words using the letter sounds we know. We also introduced some new high frequency words-- to, do, me, be. The students practice these words orally as a group and through games and other activities. This week we also began working in our Guided Reading Groups. The students read in a small group with an adult reviewing all the sounds we have learned, any high frequency words we have learned and read books together sounding out words using their phonetic knowledge.
In math, we continued to develop our knowledge of numbers to 100 through a variety of number routines, games and building number lines. Students also began using our interactive number bulletin board to show the many different ways they have learned to represent numbers. We have also been practicing how to skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s with increased confidence and accuracy. Students used 100 charts to cover and practice counting the numbers we say when skip counting.
In science, the students learned to test various materials to see if they could change the properties of those materials. They tested various items (e.g. plastic wrap, cracker, popsicle stick, string, pipecleaner) by bending, twisting, stretching, cutting and breaking to see if they could cause a physical change to the object. Students learned that soft objects are generally easier to bend, twist, cut and stretch while harder objects are easier to break.
In gym, we have been learning to use scooters. Students learned the importance of safety when using the scooters to prevent pinched fingers and crashes. They have engaged in a variety of tag games, teamwork, relay races, red light/green light and more. The scooters are excellent for developing leg and core strength.
Important Information & Reminders:
Winter Market - EMJ is excited to host our annual Winter Market again this year! Organized and run by our Paced Learning Programming students in Grades 4, 5, and 6, the event was a great success last year, and we are thrilled to bring it back. We’ll be kicking off our store during the Gingerbread House Decorating Night on December 12th, giving families a chance to shop for special items.
The students will also organize shopping times during school hours, where each class can visit the market between December 4th and December 8th. This event provides a fantastic opportunity for students to purchase gifts for family and friends at a minimal cost, with all items priced at one dollar. Some smaller items will be bundled together into a single package.
Our goal is for each student to have the opportunity to purchase five gifts. However, this will depend on the number of donations we receive. We kindly ask that you do not purchase new items for the store. Items for sale at the Winter Market should be gently used or previously loved donations that you are willing to part with for a good cause.
How You Can Help
To ensure the success of the Winter Market, we are seeking donations of good-quality items suitable for students to purchase. Please note that we cannot accept used personal hygiene items, food, used clothing, or earrings. Additionally, we ask that you refrain from sending large items due to limited storage space. Please remember that your donation may be gifted back to you!
Suggested donation items include:
- Pet toys
- Books
- Kids’ toys
- Cups
- Ornaments
- Trinket boxes
- Candles and candle holders
- Suit Ties
- Purses
- Games
- Sports items
*A list of more gift ideas will be posted in the upcoming weeks.
Donation Timeline
We will be accepting donations from November 20th to December 4th. In addition to gift items, we are also looking for gift bags, wrapping paper, and gift tags. Donations can be brought to Room 5. Proceeds from the Winter Market will go towards supporting the Calgary Food Bank.
