Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy (day after) Halloween! I hope everyone had a fun time last night dressing up and collecting candy! We'll all be on a sugar rush for a while! Below are some highlights from this week.

--------------------------------------------------

This week we worked on writing facts about bats, owls and other Halloween creatures. First we discussed what a 'fact' is. Then, we listened to and brainstormed facts we learned about each animal. Using sentence starters, the students took the facts we brainstormed and used them to complete the sentences. They continued to review using capital letters for the first word, meatball spaces between words and periods at the end of their sentences. They also used our Sound Wall and alphabet cards to sound out words in their writing.

In math, we began using the TLC carpet to learn our numbers to 100. The TLC carpet is a giant, life-sized 100 Chart. The students worked through putting all the numbers on the carpet in order from 1-100. Then we played a bunch of games to help us remember where different numbers are on the chart. For example, we played a game called "Switch" which reinforces the numbers in the corners of the chart. We also played 'Mystery Number' in which we toss a bean bag onto the carpet and have to figure out which number correlates to that square. Good brain work!

In science, we continued to learn about the properties of objects. This week we examined measurable properties including length, area and weight. Students measured various objects and compared the objects to determine the longest/shortest, lightest/heaviest etc.

In art, we learned about Pablo Picasso and his art. Students learned what cubism is-- i.e. a form of abstract art in which the subject appears to be cut up and viewed from many different angles all at the same time. They then created some Picasso inspired Frankenstein heads. They learned about how colour and shape are used to create art and can affect how a piece of art makes you feel.

In gym, we finished off the week with some fun Halloween Stations. The students got to play 'Treat Toss' (beanbag toss), 'Boo-ling' (bowling), 'Pumpkin Pass' (soccer), 'Graveyard Dash' (scooter race) and 'Witches Hat' (toss rings onto a pylon). They had a 'howl'-of-a- time!

Our Halloween Parade and party were a great success! Thank you to everyone who sent in some yummy treats and eats for our class : )
