Our Learning This Week...

Hello Families! It's been another busy and fun week! Take a look at what we have been up to!

In reading, students were introduced to our sound wall. A sound wall is a bulletin board that shows the different letter sounds we have learned. Each letter has an image to help students remember the sound and a picture of how our mouth should look when we make that sound. This helps students to be more accurate when saying the sounds and is a resource for students to help them sound out words in their reading and writing.







In writing, we have been working on fixing sentences. Students continue to develop their skills to identify the important parts of sentences-- i.e. capital letter, spaces and periods. Students are working on writing 1-3 sentences in their journals on various topics.


                         



In math, we have begun to learn about numbers to 100. Students were introduced to the 100 Chart this week and we worked through highlighting the numbers in each row to show the ones, tens, twenties etc. Students then used a hundred chart to find numbers from 0-100. They learned some strategies to help them find numbers quickly. For example, listen for the last digit in a number (e.g. 47 = seven). Find the column with a 7 at the top and go down until you get to 47. 





In science, we began talking about Matter. Students learned that matter is everywhere and all things are made of matter. They also learned that objects have properties or characteristics that can be observed and measured. They created some clues for a mystery object. Then the class tried to guess what the object was. 





In gym, we have been learning about soccer. Students are learning to dribble, trap and pass the ball using the inside of their foot. 









We also had a chance to get together with our Buddy class for the first time this year. The students met their buddy and played Roll-a-Pumpkin together. It was a blast!

Hello Families! As this was a short week there is no blog post, but I did want to let you know that our Google Classroom is now available for students to access. Below are instructions for how to login the first time.  Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as optional activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. From time-to-time I will post new activities connected to various areas of study. Our Learning this Week...

Hello Families! We have finished our first week of school. Take a look below for a sneak peek at what we've been up to : )  ----------------- This week we have spent time getting to know each other and becoming familiar with the routines of the classroom. The students have adjusted well to full days and are really enjoying participating in morning and lunch recess! We have also read a number of books about treating others the way we want to be treated and making good choices. We read "Office Buckle and Gloria" and "Do Unto Otters" to learn about the importance of rules, safety and kindness. Students sorted various actions into good choices and poor choices and pasted them into a chart.    We also began reading books by Dr. Suess and discussing rhyme. The students listened for rhyming words in stories, played a variety of rhyming games and completed some rhyming sheets.       In math we have been working on reviewing numbers to 10 and 20 and also talking abo...

Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary.
