Our Learning this Week...

Hello Families! I hope you all had a lovely week. We have been learning about so many different things this week! Take a peek : )

In Language arts we learned about poetry and created an acrostic poem for Thanksgiving. The students listened to stories about giving and being thankful and even a fun one about some kids saving turkeys from becoming dinner! We talked about how important it is to be thankful for what we have and also that it's more important to give to others than to get things. The students brainstormed things that they are thankful for to include in their poems. 

   



Our Fall Walk was a great success! The weather was great and the students saw a lot of signs of fall. We took pictures of various insects, animals, leaves and more that we saw on the way. 


    



In art we created some fun, fall leaves using an art technique called pointilism. Pointilism uses dots of color to create pictures. These dots, rather than lines, blend to create the image that we see. We also explored a style of art called Metis Dot art which also uses dots of colour to created colourful designs. After dotting our leaves with various fall colours, we cut out the leaves and arranged them on a black background to make them really stand out. 

               
     



This week in gym we have of course been learning how to skate on inline skates. Students learned how to put on their protective equipment, how to do a safety drop and how to position their skates using a v-shape to skate. 


 




We also went outside one day for gym and played the game 'Camouflage'. In this game the students have to hide or blend in with the environment while the "hunter/predator" (i,e. the teacher) tries to see them. The hunter cannot move from their spot but must call out anyone they can see by name.

Hello Families! As this was a short week there is no blog post, but I did want to let you know that our Google Classroom is now available for students to access. Below are instructions for how to login the first time.  Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as optional activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. From time-to-time I will post new activities connected to various areas of study. Most of the activities linked right now are to general websites that contain a variety of skills and concepts related to math and reading.  If you have trouble logging in or questions about the classroom, let me know. Our Learning this Week...

Hello Families! We have finished our first week of school. Take a look below for a sneak peek at what we've been up to : )  ----------------- This week we have spent time getting to know each other and becoming familiar with the routines of the classroom. The students have adjusted well to full days and are really enjoying participating in morning and lunch recess! We have also read a number of books about treating others the way we want to be treated and making good choices. We read "Office Buckle and Gloria" and "Do Unto Otters" to learn about the importance of rules, safety and kindness. Students sorted various actions into good choices and poor choices and pasted them into a chart.    We also began reading books by Dr. Suess and discussing rhyme. The students listened for rhyming words in stories, played a variety of rhyming games and completed some rhyming sheets.       In math we have been working on reviewing numbers to 10 and 20 and also talking abo...

Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary.
