Our Learning This Week....

I can hardly believe that we are almost done the month of September! It's amazing how time flies! Here's a look at our week.

In language arts we have learned 4 new High Frequency Words: said, I, the, and. These words are up in the classroom so that students can reference them when doing writing activities. Many of these words are called "Heart Words" because there is a part of the word we cannot use our phonics knowledge to decode. For example, in the word "said" the /ai/ makes the short /e/ sound not the long /a/ sound. These words are important to know and be able to use in our writing and early reading activities.

 



       


We have also continued to review sounds of the alphabet and categorizing pictures based on their beginning sounds. 





In math, we continued to explore numbers to 20. Students also began learning a new math skill-- subitizing. When we subitize we try to recognize a group of dots or objects quickly without counting all the dots we see. For example, if there is an image of 6 dots a student might notice that the dots can be broken into two groups of three. Three and three is six. So without having to count they can determine the number of total dots. This activity helps to develop students number sense and mental math skills. 







We also began to explore and use the calendar. Students created a calendar for the month of September and used the calendar to answer questions, such as, "How many Mondays there are in September?" or "How many days are there in September?"








This week we learned about Orange Shirt Day and the impact it had on many Indigenous peoples and communities. Students watched a video explaining how Orange Shirt Day began. They coloured an orange shirt and created a page in their visual journal. Students are developing their understanding of this sad time in our history and what it is important to learn about it.






In gym we have been training for the Terry Fox Run. The students were very motivated to run/walk as many laps as they could. They did a fantastic job and demonstrated increased understanding and awareness of who Terry Fox was and why we run every year in his memory. Students also completed a shoe print to put in their visual journal.

Hello Families! As this was a short week there is no blog post, but I did want to let you know that our Google Classroom is now available for students to access. Below are instructions for how to login the first time.  Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as optional activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. From time-to-time I will post new activities connected to various areas of study. Our Learning this Week...

Hello Families! We have finished our first week of school. Take a look below for a sneak peek at what we've been up to : )  ----------------- This week we have spent time getting to know each other and becoming familiar with the routines of the classroom. The students have adjusted well to full days and are really enjoying participating in morning and lunch recess! We have also read a number of books about treating others the way we want to be treated and making good choices. We read "Office Buckle and Gloria" and "Do Unto Otters" to learn about the importance of rules, safety and kindness. Students sorted various actions into good choices and poor choices and pasted them into a chart.    We also began reading books by Dr. Suess and discussing rhyme. Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary.
