This Week in Room 21...
Here's a look at our work this week...
---------------------------------------
In writing we continued to work through the research process learning about monarch butterflies. We learned how to create jot notes and turn them into sentences. Next we will add photos and captions.
In social we began to examine the community of Metaghan in Nova Scotia. We learned that Nova Scotia is a maritime community because it's near the ocean. We studied some of the geographical features that are common to this type of landscape such as beaches, cliffs, coves, and bays. We also learned that Nova Scotia has many trees and 75% of the province is covered in forests.
In math we finished learning about patterns and engaged in some fun centres activities to review the concepts learned. Next week we will have a wrap up quiz before moving on to geometry.
In Health and P, E students have been tracking how much time they spend being active and playing outside each day as well as the amount of time they spend sleeping and on devices (ie. screen time). They are working towards more sleep and activity time and less screen time.
As part of building our awareness around being active, the students are working on inventing a game that they can play outside. When they have finished developing their game they will teach it to their Gr. 4/5 Buddy!
Last but not least-- as part of our learning around computer science-- the kids got to learn how to program a microbit! Microbits are like a very small computer that you can hold in your hand. It's really just a microprocessor with a small screen of lights and a few buttons. It can also be hooked up to other devices and act like a mini controller. The kids had fun working with their buddies to code messages, pictures and commands into their microbit!
Important Information & Reminders:
- Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
- Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
- RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
