This Week in Room 21...

Happy Friday! Here's a look at our week : )

------------------------------------------------------------------

In ELAL, we looked at the suffix -ed. Students learned when we use it (i.e. to show past tense) and also how it affects the spelling of a word. For example, in some words you simply add -ed (e.g. jump = jumped) but or other words you need to double the last letter and then add -ed (e.g. hop = hopped). Students built words using their moveable alphabet listening carefully to the sounds.

This week, we looked at the daily life of people living in Nunavut today and compared it to daily life in our own community. Students learned that people living in Nunavut have very similar lives to ours with some important differences. For example, they eat many of the same foods, go to school, have a variety of jobs and live in modern homes with the same modern conveniences. On the other hand, they eat many traditional foods (e.g. whale, blubber, seal, arctic char), learn about their own language (Inuktituk) and culture (throat singing, Inuit games, hunting) and their homes are built on stilts because of the permafrost.  Students worked on filling in a chart showing the similarities and differences between the two communities.

In science, we continued to learn about living systems. We focused on the needs and parts of plants and have begun to plant some seeds that we will observe as they grow. Students filled in the first two pages of their Plant Journal diagramming and labeling their drawings.

In math, we continued with our study of patterns. Students have been learning to label patterns using A, B, C, D and also to create similar but different patterns. For example, the pattern red/blue/red/blue is an AB pattern. I could make another pattern such as dog/cat/dog/cat which is also an AB pattern. These patterns are the same but different. Students used coloured tiles to create a variety of patterns that were the same but different.

In art, we began creating Pattern Bug art. This is based on the book 'Pattern Bugs' by Trudy Harris. In the story the author creates a pattern in the text which is then used in the pictures as well. Can you spot the AB patterns in the picture below? The students created their own colour pattern for their border and then used that pattern to add details to their picture. Next, they will paint over their picture with tempra paint to create a crayon resist.

In gym, the students have had a fun week navigating the Mission Impossible obstacle course. Each student that made it all the way through the course without making an mistakes was able to write their name on the whiteboard in the gym.

Finally, it is Mother's Day this weekend. We want to wish all the moms out their a very Happy Mother's Day and thank them for all the wonderful things they do! Your child has made a special gift and card to give to you : )

Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
