This Week in Room 21....

Here's a look at our week...

---------------------------------------------------------------

In language arts we looked at plural nouns. Students learned that when a word ends in x, s, ss, ch, z and o you add -es.  We played a fun online game and completed an activity sheet to reinforce the concept. Students continue to review the letter sounds, letter clusters, diagraphs and long vowel sounds that we have been learning over the year and use this knowledge to read increasingly challenging texts.

In math, we began learning about patterns. We learned that a pattern is something you can predict. Some patterns repeat terms over and over such as: red/black/red/black. Other patterns repeat a number sequence such as: 2, 4, 6, 8 etc... (add 2 each time).  Students also learned to create patterns using a variety of criteria-- i.e. colour, shape, size, direction etc. Finally, they learned to identify the core and terms of a pattern.

In Science, we continued to explore living systems and began to look at the needs of plants and animals. Students also explored how plants and animals are alike and different.

We also learned about the binary number system and how it is used to code computers. The students worked on a fun "Crack the Code" activity and did some programming on CodeSpark.

In gym we finished our gymnastics centres. Students rotated through nine different stations with a variety of equipment. Next week is our final week. The students will get to navigate an obstacle course using the gymnastics skills they have learned.

Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
