Hello and Happy Friday! Here's a sneak peek at our week : )
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week we started working in multi-aged literacy groups working on increasing our knowledge of letter sounds and letter combinations to improve our skills in decoding-- blending and segmenting- words into sounds and vice versa.
In writing, we talked about Remembrance Day and why we take time to remember those that have fought in wars. We watched a video and listened to a story about peace. We talked about what peace means and how we can help to create a peaceful world. Then we wrote down our ideas. Next week we will add the finishing touches to these.
In math, we have finished our unit on numbers to 100 (Gr. 1) or 1000 (Gr. 2) and place value. Students completed a short assessment of the concepts we have covered including skip counting, identifying numbers, ordering numbers, building numbers with base ten blocks and telling if a number is greater or less than another number.
We also did a pumpkin investigation in which we estimated the number of seeds in our pumpkin then counted them to see how close we got. We also measured the height of our pumpkin and placed it in water to see if it would float! (It did.). Students filled in their pumpkin investigation sheets after each activity.
In gym the students participated in some fun Halloween Centres using many of the skills learned so far this year-- dribbling, tossing, scootering and bowling. We also started learning about basketball and practiced dribbling using one hand. Then we played a fun game of Red Light/Green Light to see how well we could control the basketball while dribbling and walking at the same time.
In art we finished our peek-a-boo Halloween collages. They turned out great and really helped to develop our cutting skills and also taught us about perspective.
We also met with our Gr. 4/5 Buddies and had the chance to log onto the computers for the first time this year! The students were able to join our Google Classroom, practice typing using an online, interactive website and look at some fun math and reading games.
Important Information & Reminders:
- Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
- Inline Skating - As you know, inline skating was cancelled again this week so we will be having our last inline skating session Wednesday, Nov. 15. Please ensure your child is dressed properly for this event.
