This Week in Room 21....

Here's a sneak peek at our learning this week!

             ---------------------------

This week students learned about the au/aw sound. Students learned a cute story about a rotten apple that tastes 'aw-aw-aw-awwwwwful' to help them remember the correct sound. They also built words (raw, saw, paw, law, lawn, fawn, launch etc.) using those sounds and listened to a song about the au/aw sound.

In writing, students continued to work on their persuasive writing paragraph. They began by looking at the OREO model for writing a persuasive paragraph. After reviewing the 'Who Would Win' videos we watched last week, they then began filling out an OREO template stating their opinion as to which animal would win and why.

We also began looking at non-fiction text versus fiction text. Students learned that non-fiction texts are true and contain facts. Fiction texts are make-believe. Next they learned about the specific features of non-fiction books (table of contents, photographs, captions, diagrams, maps, glossary, index) and compared them to those fiction books. Finally, they each were given a non-fiction text about animals. They did a scavenger hunt to look for each of the different text features we discussed in their book.

In math, students worked on continuing to identify and recognize 2D shapes. They also worked on identifying shapes within shapes. For example, a trapezoid is composed of two triangles and a rectangle.

In Science, students did another observation of our caterpillars. Some of them have begun to build their chrysalis and are ready to be put into our butterfly enclosure until they hatch.

Of course we can't forget our amazing field trip to the zoo! Thank you again to all the volunteers who came with us and parent council for the generous support of this field experience activity. The students had a great time learning about the many animals in the Asia Exhibit and exploring the many other exhibits at the zoo.
