This Week in Room 21...

Happy Thursday! Just a reminder that there is No School today, Friday, May 5. Keep reading for a sneak peak at our week!

--------------------------------------------------------------

This week's featured author was, Arnold Lobel. Arnold Lobel is knows for his Frog and Toad series. These books follow the adventures and misadventures of two friends named, Frog and Toad. Toad is always getting himself into scapes or having a bad day and Frog helps him to solve them. They are heartwarming and funny stories that kids can relate to. They are also great for early readers as the text is simpler and more repetitive. A great choice for your budding reader!

This week the students focused on learning a  new spelling pattern for the long u sound-- /ue/. They worked on making words and listening for the long /u/ sound in words.

In writing, the students began working on writing their good copy of their stories. We looked at what makes our story a 2, 3 or a 4 and ways we can improve our writing, such as, changing an ordinary word for a juicy word. Their stories will soon be ready to share!

In math, students continued learning about various types of measurement and ways to measure objects. They focused on area and a review of length, height and mass. Students engaged in a scavenger hunt to find objects that were longer/short or lighter/heavier or the same as a given unit of measurement. For example, they had to find objects that were 5 paperclips long or heavier than 10 cubes etc. They had a great time moving and learning!

In science, students worked on sorting pictures of plants into groups with partners. They were given a poster with five catergories and some pictures of various plants. They had to work together to put each picture into the correct group.

This week we planted some potatoes for our school garden. We also went outside to work in the garden tilling the soil and removing dead leaves, grass etc.

On Thursday, we went for a Community Walk to look for Signs of Spring and listen to a story. The students found lots of buds, bugs and birds.  Then we went back to the school to do a directed drawing of a sunflower.
