Important Info regarding the upcoming Spring Showcase from Miss Dafoe:

The Grade 1 students have been working hard practicing their Spring Showcase songs. They are representing the colour yellow in the show. They will also be helping the Grade 2 students sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". 

The showcase will take place on Wednesday, March 15 in the evening. Please have your child start to look for anything YELLOW to wear. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. If they can't find anything yellow it will be ok. Hopefully most students will have a yellow t-shirt. Many thanks! - Miss Dafoe

This week in Language Arts, we began a new activity called 'Author Study'. The students enjoyed learning about our first author-- Kevin Henkes-- and listening to some of his stories.  Below is a selection of the books that Mr. Henkes is known for. His stories are relatable to students because they deal with situations that kids often face and offer a positive message of overcoming challenges. They also contain a wealth of vocabulary words that are unfamiliar to students and offer an opportunity to learn about new words and their meanings expanding students understanding of texts. 





In math, students began learning about subtraction strategies. They focused on using number lines and counting back to solve problems. They played a fun game called "Race to 0" to help them practice and apply their strategies. 







In Science, students finished up their log cabins. Next week they will have a chance to present their log cabins to their classmates and discuss their designs. 






Our field trip was a huge success. The students had an awesome time learning about building things through the 'Architect Adventure' program. They also enjoyed exploring various exhibits and watching a movie at the Dome Theatre about meteorites. 









In gym, we began a new unit on badminton. The students began the week learning how to properly hold a badminton racquet and how to hit using an overhand and underhand serve. They began by using balloons and then moved on to using a birdie. Today they worked on target practice using hula hoops and then a relay race in groups to see who could get all their birdies into the hoop first. 








Important Reminders & Updates:
  • Continue with Home Reading. If you are finding the books too easy or too hard please let me know so that we can adjust the level. 
  • Please have your child return their Spelling Booklet each Monday. This week's spelling words were: what, when, very, yes, with, they
  • Please ensure your child has proper clothing for the weather. While we may not be going out for recess and lunch on really cold days there is always the possibility of an unexpected fire alarm, late busses or other events in which warm clothing is necessary. 
  • Our Google Classroom is up and running! This is a resource for students to use at home to support learning here at school. You can log into your child's classroom by following the steps below:
  1. Go to Google. com.
  2. Click the blue "Sign In" icon near the top right of screen.
  3. Click on the "waffle" icon and select the chalkboard icon from the drop down menu.
  4. Enter your child's email address. (this can be found in your MyCBE parent account or you can ask me and I can email it to you.)
  5. Enter your child's password. (All students have the same password. It is: 12345678 )
  6. Click on "Mrs. V's Classroom")
  7. Go to "Classwork" tab for links to games and activities.

Hello Families! As this was a short week there is no blog post, but I did want to let you know that our Google Classroom is now available for students to access. Below are instructions for how to login the first time.  Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as optional activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. From time-to-time I will post new activities connected to various areas of study. Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary. Our Learning This Week...

Hello Everyone! What an amazing performance by the students at EMJ last night and.  especially our very own Grade Ones! They were fantastic! Keep reading to see what else we have been up to this week : )  --------------------------------------------------- In language arts we have been learning about 'how-to' or procedural writing. To start we talked about why we write-- to entertain, inform, teach, instruct etc. Then we looked specifically at giving instructions. The students gave me the steps to make a Wow butter and jam sandwich with some hilarious results! Then we made popcorn and the students worked in groups to write down and draw the steps to make popcorn. We also ate some popcorn so that made it even more fun!  In math, we have continued to learn about counting collections of objects and representing those numbers in a variety of ways.
