Our Learning This Week...
Brrr! It's a chilly one! We had such a fabulous time at the Winter Concert last night. Thanks to all the students and families that came out to perform and show our holiday/winter spirit!
This week in ELAL students learned about plural nouns. Students in grade one learned that when you have more than one of an object you add /-s/ to make it plural-- i.e. cat --> cats. The grade twos learned that in some cases, we add an /-es/ instead of an /-s/ when making a word plural. For example, if a word ends with: sh, ch, s, z or x.
Students have also continued to work on developing their writing skills. This week we read the story, 'Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day!' In this story the main character describes the worst day that he has ever had. After listening to the story the students brainstormed ideas for their most terrible day. Things like having a cold shower, forgetting your lunch at home, not getting along with their friends, losing something important, others forgetting their birthday or getting sick on their birthday etc. The students then orally told their ideas using the 5 Finger Story technique and filled in a graphic organizer with their ideas. Lastly, they learned about using some important transition words in their writing to tell the order of the events in their day. Students are working hard to sound out words in their sentences, use capitals and include periods. We also learned about using an exclamation point to show strong feelings or emotions. This fit well with the writing about our HORRIBLE day!
In math, students continued to learn about various strategies to add and subtract. They worked on using a number line and counting on and back in their head to solve problems with numbers to 20 (grade 1) and numbers to 100 (grade 2).
In science, we continued with our study of matter. We looked at different ways that we can try to change the properties of matter by bending, twisting, stretching, cutting and breaking. Students recorded their findings in a chart.
In social students continued to explore natural resources in the regions of Canada as well as natural and manmade landmarks in their local community. They learned about the Cordillera and the Canadian Shield. They also learned some interesting facts about two important landmarks in Calgary--- the Saddledome and Nose Hill Park. The Saddledome was built in 1980 for the Winter Olympics and the Calgary Flames hockey franchise. Nose Hill Park is the highest point in Calgary and was well-known by the Blackfoot people as an important and sacred place.
