This Week in Room 21....

Happy May long, Everyone! I hope you all have a lovely & relaxing long weekend : )  Here's what we've been up to this week!

             -------------------‐---‐------------‐------

This week we focused on the many different ways to spell the 'air' sound (i.e. air, ear, are). We watched a video introducing the sound, brainstormed words with that sound (I.e. hair, pair, pear, bear, bare, care, scare etc.) and completed some Making Words activities. We also looked at what happens to the spelling of a word that ends in /y/ when we add -ed (i.e. carry = carried).

The last couple weeks we have been reading the Fly Guy books by Tedd Arnold during Author Study.. These delightful and charming books are a wonderful choice for budding readers. They contain simple text and humorous illustrations that engage and entertain young readers while helping them to build their reading skills.. The students have really enjoyed this book series and are encouraged to sign them out of the library to take home and read!

In writing, we began to learn about non-fiction texts in preparation for our animal research project. The students learned about the different text features in non-fiction books, such as, photograps, captions, maps, diagrams, labels, bold text, the table of contents and the glossary. They matched pictures of each feature to the correct terms and completed a scavenger hunt in which they had to look through a book and note which page they found each feature on.

In math we continued to explore patterns. The students learned about pattern rules. For example, the pattern rule for 'XXOXXO' would be 'XXO repeat'. They also learned that more than one  thing can change in a pattern. For example, in the pattern 'XoXo' both the size and shape of the terms is changing. Lastly, we started to learn about growing patterns. We read the book "Rooster's Off to See the World", by Eric Carle and noticed how the number of animals in the book kept increasing. Students used cutouts of the characters in the book to illustrate how the pattern grew and wrote a rule to describe what the pattern was growing by. They also built some growing patterns using tiles.

In science, the students learned about the term offspring. They discovered that 'offspring' are the babies of plants and animals. Students were given a picture of a baby or adult and had to find the person who had their match. They worked on identifying similarities and differences between adult animals and their offspring.

They also learned about the life cycles of plants and animals and worked in a group to act out the life cycle of one animal. The rest of the class tried to identify which animal they were dramatizing.

In gym we began learning how to play soccer. The students have learned to dribble, trap, pass and shoot on goal.

Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
