This Week in Room 21...

Here's a sneak peek at our week....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In writing, we are nearly done the good copies of our fractured/twisted fairy tales.  The students are excited to share these with you at Parent-Teacher Conferences next week.

(pic to come)

In reading, the Gr. 1's learned about the y (/long i/)vowel sound and the Gr. 2's learned about the /ow/ and /oe/ sounds. Students made words using these letters using our moveable alphabet.

In math, we played some math games, finished up some math centres and completed our unit on subtraction strategies. Then we began working a new unit working on problem solving strategies.

In science, we have been learning about light and its characteristics. Students played a game in which they had to describe an object or concept related to light and have others guess what it was. They loved this activity and had fun doing it in partners and with the whole class.  Students engaged in a number of experiments that

In gym, we continued to develop our skills using skipping ropes. The students practiced using a hula hoop to skip and a long rope. The worked through different stations to build their skills.

On Friday, we got together with our Buddies in Gr. 5 to complete a St. Patrick's Day Scavenger Hunt. The students have been learning about the different coins and what they are worth. Each morning we practice during our calendar time names the coins, counting them and using them to add and subtract. We also use them to practice skip counting by 5s and 10s. The students went around the school and found little "pots of gold" hidden in different places. With the help of their buddies, they counted the coins and recorded the amount on their sheets.

Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
  • Healthy Hunger is up and running. Below are the upcoming fun lunch dates. To order please go to the Healthy Hunger website.
