This Week in Room 21....

Take a look at our learning this week!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week the students learned about the sounds made by /oi/ and /oy/. They created some words using these sounds and listened for the sounds in stories and poems.

This week's Author of the Week was Bill Peet. Bill Peet's books are full of colourful illustrations and quirky characters. They are a treasure trove of vocabulary offering many opportunities to learn new words and their meanings.

In writing, students continued to learn about persuasive writing. As a springboard to learning to write a persuasive paragraph, students have been watching some Who Would Win? videos. Each video features two animals, describes their size, defences and other characteristics and then asks which one would win if they were to fight each other? The students worked with partners to list the characteristics that would help each animal win. Then the selected which animal they thought would win for their paragraph.

In math, students continued to learn about 2D shapes. They listened to the story "The Very Greedy Triangle" which talks about a triangle that gets tired of his shape and continually asks for more sides becoming a new shape each time. In the end, he has so many sides he turns into a circle! After listening, the students went on a shape hunt around the school marking down each time they saw an object with one of the 2D shapes they are learning about.

In science, we welcomed some new visitors to our classroom-- caterpillars! We will be observing these little guys as they grow and turn into butterflies. We also began to look at the needs of animals and compared that to the needs of plants. Students completed a sheet showing what animals and what plants need.

In gym, we continued learning our soccer skills. The students rotated through some stations in which they practiced passing, dribbling and shooting on a net.
